  1. What is PNX?
PNX, or Pulsar Network eXchange, is the flagship technology Pulsar uses to deliver a host of services to carriers and specialized service providers. PNX is a powerful, large-scale network-based switching application. The platform consists of host controllers, interactive voice response units (IVR), database servers and other support services and clients.
    • PNX host controllers are based on POSIX compliant LynxOS by LynuxWorks (more information)
    • When integrated with the Excel switching platform, PNX supports various carrier transports, including T1, E1, VoIP
    • PNX is scalable from 192 to 30,000 ports per node
    • The platform accepts H.323, SIP, SS7/C7, MFCR2/CAS, FXS, DP, ISDN-PRI, E&M, DTMF, FGA-FGD, MFR-1, FXO, MF, MGCP, H.248 and CSTA protocols
    • PNX provides real-time call data records with recovery tools in case of Database outage
    • The system is built around hot swappable soft switch controllers, supplying the five-nines carrier-grade dependability demanded by today's competitive marketplace
  2. How scaleable is PNX?
PNX is scalable from 196 to 30,000 trunk ports per node, not including the VoIP ports. Each PNX host pair can control multiple nodes, providing almost limitless expansion capabilities.
  3. Can PNX do least call routing?
Yes, PNX can route calls across different carriers or network protocols by country, region, city or even prefix code. Different call routes can be automatically selected at different times of each day to provide maximum flexibility in controlling route costs. Additionally, PNX is the only switch of its kind that can handle literally hundreds of thousands of different call routing schemes.
  4. What reliability experience have customers had with the PNX platform?
The telecommunications industry routinely demands reliability in the order of 99.999% up time each year. Pulsar equipment and support meet - and generally, exceed - this five-nines reliability requirement. The PNX system has hot-swappable hosts and our billing system uses redundant database servers to help ensure that your system will not fail. In the extremely rare instance that a failure occurs, we provide tried and tested disaster recovery tools to recover critical call data... and revenue... in the event of an outage.
  5. Does Pulsar offer a prepaid platform?
Yes, our PNX Manager billing system is designed to provide both pre-paid and post-paid products for Calling Card, ANI Based Enhanced Long Distance, 1010 or 1+ Switched Long Distance, or Tandem-Switched product types. PNX Manager has a web interface that allows a system owner to create agents who can create and rate their own products. It also supports Customer Service screens and call rating features.
  6. What is PNX Manager and how does it work?
PNX Manager is the platform's database-driven wholesale billing and administrative module. This application includes an integral web application server that provides the ability for different user types to log in and perform varied tasks, such as creating products, administrating rates or providing customer support. PNX Manager also supplies numerous reporting tools to help you identity strengths and weaknesses in your service offerings, and allows other aspects of the PNX system to be monitored.
  7. What is Enhanced Long Distance?
Sometimes referred to as "Pre-paid ANI (Automatic Number Indentification)", Enhanced Long Distance is a service that allows subscribers to dial a toll-free access number from their home or other pre-registered telephone number and automatically be recognized as a special services subscriber based upon their calling number or ANI, speeding access to services you provide using the PNX system. If a subscriber calls the access number from a phone other than their registered ANI, the system will prompt for a PIN. PNX supports a customer-definable number of ANI registrations for each subscriber account.
  8. What is virtual hosting and does Pulsar provide this kind of service?
Some carriers or service providers don't want the headaches and overhead costs of running their own platform, but still want the advantages of our complete PNX solution and all of the associated carrier access needed for a large-scale service implementation. In those instances, Pulsar can offer the full benefits of the PNX system on a time-shared or service bureau basis. Our virtual hosting service is similar to switch partitioning, but with the added capabilities of all of our unique application services as well. Contact us for more information on how you can rapidly put the power of exclusive Pulsar technology to work for your company.
  9. If I need assistance, how do I contact Pulsar support?
